Lorcana

This month is the new trading card game called Lorcana! It is made by Ravensburger, the company behind renown puzzles and the popular game, Villainous. Just like Villainous, Ravensburger is using the Disney IP. This is a card game where you create decks, or use the premade starter decks, and battle against your opponent(s).

This game is a trading card game. You can collect cards in different ways like from booster packs. This will give you the different cards to create your deck. I won’t get too far into the weeds with this blog post, as we go over most of that in the podcast. What I’d like to discuss here is how i feel it stacks up against the other popular trading card games.

Little bit of history on me and TCGs is that I’ve played a decent amount of them and certainly the most popular ones. I started with Pokemon, and then Yu-Gi-Oh. Mixed in during that time I played the Dragon Ball Z TCG, but not much that was mostly for collecting. After those I moved to Magic the Gathering, which I would say is now the game I’ve played the most.

Coming from those I think Lorcana stacks up quite well. It’s a fun game that plays at a quick pace so you can easily get multiple games in during a session. There is still a lot of sets ready to come out and the Disney IP is massive. I don’t think they will have a problem pushing out more product to keep things fresh for the players.

Those are the top good parts. The downside is that it’s not too complex yet. I say yet since when recording the podcast, things like locations hadn’t even come out yet, so the game is certainly going to evolve and gain more complexity. Do I think it will reach MTG? No I don’t, but I will say it’s built to last longer than most.

Overall, Lorcana is a fun new game that I will keep playing for the foreseeable future. It’s no Magic, but I could see it competing with Pokemon with the young audiences just breaking into the hobby.
