Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Diablo IV & the Borderlands Movie

We know form last month that Donny had been playing Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a fantasy spinoff of the popular Borderlands series. He and his wife were able to finish up the game since we last spoke, and they’ve now moved on to the fantastic adventure game Diablo IV!

I watched the Borderlands movie recently and I have to say, despite its relatively low ratings, I found to be surprisingly fun. Donny agreed and while it may not have been a cinematic masterpiece, we both also agreed that it was far better than many critics gave it credit for. The movie captures the essence of the game well, with a quirky, fast-paced narrative that fits the tone of the franchise. It’s definitely a fun watch for fans of the series who are looking for some light-hearted, action-packed entertainment.

Check the bottom of last month’s blog post to see how I did in the SWU PQ. I can’t go through it again…

Game Review: Sorry!

For our review this month, we took a trip down memory lane to review the classic board game Sorry!, which is a family staple for many. We broke down the game in a fun, yet honest, way:

  • Setup/Learning Curve: Thumbs up from both of us! Sorry! is incredibly easy to learn, and the setup is quick. It’s perfect for all ages and can be played in a flash.

  • Game Balance: This one got a bit mixed. I gave it a shrug due to the game variant that gives you a hand of cards instead of it just being random draw and go. Donny, on the other hand, gave it a thumbs down. Even the variant still seemed too luck-based for him and how it feels like the winner is decided by chance rather than strategy. We all know how he hates that.

  • Replayability: Thumbs up here! Sorry! is a game that can be played over and over again, especially with friends or family. It’s simple, but it’s that simplicity that keeps people coming back for more.

  • Overall Theme/Design: I gave it a thumbs up because, for a game that’s been around for decades, it still holds up with its colorful board and it just doesn’t seem like it needs anything else. Donny, however, wasn’t as keen, giving it a thumbs down, mentioning that there are plenty of old games that have far more art and design to them.

  • Cost: A definite thumbs up! You can usually find Sorry! at a thrift shop or yard sale for next to nothing, which is a big win in our books.

The Royal Game of Ur: An Ancient Classic

We wrapped up the episode by diving into something truly fascinating – The Royal Game of Ur, an ancient Mesopotamian game that holds the title of being one of the oldest known games in history. We were both amazed at how this simple game, which dates back to around 2600 BCE, has survived for thousands of years and is still played by people today, with plenty of new versions you can buy online. We talked about its historical significance, the gameplay mechanics, and the fact that it’s very similar to Sorry!. They are both racing games that have safe zones for your pieces.

That’s a wrap for this episode! Whether you’re a gamer, a board game enthusiast, or a history buff, we hope you found something interesting in our discussion. As always, we had a blast recording, and we can’t wait for the next episode! If you missed this one, make sure to tune in for more fun discussions.

Until next time, game on! 🎮🎲
